The Hawaii Police Department (HPD) continues their search and manhunt for wanted suspect Walter Gomes III, who is wanted in connection to an officer-involved shooting incident that occurred in the Kaloko Industrial Area early Thursday Morning (March 22nd).

The investigation had lead HPD to the North Kohala district where officers had located the White Cadillac Escalade, which Gomes was reported to have been operating at the time of the shooting in Kaloko, at a business in Hawi where officers had tried approach the suspect and where he evaded officers once again, leading them on a chase throughout Hawi town. HPD found the SUV abandoned near Old Camp 17 Road south of Hawi town, which apparently had struck another vehicle at the scene, it’s unknown at this time if the vehicle struck was apart of the search or chase. That’s where Gomes was believed to be on foot.

Akoni Pule Highway (Hwy 270) between Upolu Airport Road to Hawi Road (Hwy 250) was closed to all traffic for over 8 hours while HPD Detectives from the Area II Criminal Investigation Division (CID) conducted an investigation of the scene and had recovered the Cadillac SUV. They also began an all-out search of the surrounding area for Gomes. Hwy 270 had since been reopened as of 8:00 pm Thursday evening.

Hawaii Fire Department (HFD) Chopper 2 assisted HPD with conducting aerial searches of the area between Hawi town and Upolu Airport until nightfall on Thursday evening. Whereas of 9:45 pm, HPD still had moderate police presences in the North Kohala district and continuing with their search and manhunt.

HPD is advising the residences in the North Kohala district to lock their doors and report any sightings or information on whereabouts of Gomes to HPD’s Non-Emergency line at 808-935-3311. The public is being advised not to approach Gomes as he is considered armed and dangerous.
