An islandwide outage on Kauai’i ‘s has knocked out the power cooperative’s largest generating unit and rolling blackouts could be implemented, the utility said Sunday.
At about 4:30 p.m. Sunday, roughly 90 percent of the power cooperative’s members had their electricity restored. Kaua’i Island Utility Cooperative serves 33,000 members and all were affected, said Beth Tokioka, communications manager.
The outage also impacted the KIUC’s phone system.
Generation capacity is limited and if loads exceed capacity, the temporary blackouts may be needed.
“Although the likelihood of this happening is slim, we feel it is best to forewarn members,” the KIUC said in a media alert.
The outage occurred at about 2:30 p.m. when the main generating unit at the Kapaia Power Station experienced a fault, the utility said. KIUC is investigating the cause of the fault.
