Pololu Hikers Rescued

(BIVN) – Two visitors from Utah were rescued from the cliffs of Pololū Valley on Tuesday afternoon, after they were trapped by a rapidly rising tide.

The Hawaiʻi County Fire Department says the two hikers, a 21-year-old female and a 24-year-old male, were unfamiliar with the area and became stranded on the rocky shoreline at the base of a cliff between Pololū Valley and Honokane Valley.

According to a fire department dispatch:

They were monitored from a lookout on the western ridge of Pololu Valley until C-1 dropped off one rescue personnel to initiate contact. Hikers were then air lifted via billy pugh net to pre-designated LZ manned by Co. 15 on western ridge of Pololu valley. M-15 confirmed hikers had no injuries. Rescue Company 7 was cancelled en-route.

The alert went out just before 1 p.m. and the rescue operation was finished before 2:30 p.m.
