Tropical Storm Flossie Update

Sunday at noon:

This is Hawaii County Civil Defense with a Tropical Storm Flossie update message for Sunday, August 4 at noon.  As of 11:00 am today the center of Flossie was approximately 435 miles east of Hawaii Island at latitude 19.0 N and longitude 148.5 W, moving W at 12 miles per hour.  Strongest sustained winds are estimated at 40 miles per hour with higher gusts.  Be aware that Tropical Storms are erratic and can change speed, direction and intensity quickly.

The Central Pacific Hurricane Center has issued a High Surf Warning for east facing shores of Hawaii Island through Monday.  A High Surf Warning means large breaking surf, significant shore break, and dangerous currents that could cause significant injury or death.

The following public safety measures are in effect;

  • Onekahakaha Beach Park is closed due to dangerous surf conditions.
  • Camping permits and pavilion rentals for Onekahakaha, Whittington and Punaluu Beach Parks are cancelled for today.  
  • Bayfront Parking lot on Kamehameha Avenue will remain closed until further notice.
  • The Hele-On buses will continue to pick-up passengers behind the Afook-Chinen Civil Auditorium.
