If you regularly fish for Goatfish (i.e. Weke, Moana, Kumu) and/or Pacific Threadfin (Moi) then the DLNR Division of Aquatic Resources would like your help in gathering information regarding the status of these fish species in Hawaiian waters.

Hawaii, UnCruise Adventures, Molokai, Local Moi Fish

As a volunteer angler, you’ll be asked to catch, tag, release and record specific data on Goatfish and Moi. The three objectives are to gather information on: 1) the size distribution of fish caught and/or released by fishermen, 2) stock distribution throughout the islands based on the numbers of Goatfish and Moi tagged and recaptured, and 3) determine the movement/migration and habitat patterns of these fish.

Members of the Goatfish family are popular food fishes, with about 12 species found here in Hawaii. Moi are also much sought after as a coveted sport and food fish.

The ultimate goal of this project is to promote conservation and management of these valued resources, while providing for the needs of recreational, commercial, and subsistence fishing for the people of Hawaii.

To learn more on how you can help, either call 808-587-0593 or email fishtagging@hawaii.gov
