(BIVN) – The road to the summit of Mauna Kea is closed due to “High Humidity, Below Freezing temperatures, Ice and Snow on the roadways”, rangers say, as a Winter Weather Advisory is in effect for Hawaiʻi Island summits.
The National Weather Service says:
An upper level low will decrease temperatures over the Big Island summits below the freezing level and produce convective snow showers through Sunday morning.
Snow occurring. Plan on slippery road conditions. Storm total snow accumulations around three inches are expected.
A Winter Weather Advisory for snow means periods of snow will cause travel difficulties. Be prepared for snow covered roads and limited visibilities, and use extreme caution while driving.
Forecasters say the Winter Weather Advisory is in effect until 6 a.m. Sunday.
Maunakea Rangers will be making checks and this message will be updated as conditions change.
