Another storm is headed this way and it is expected to become a hurricane as it comes closer to Hawaii this weekend. Stay prepared & tuned to KNKR and knkr.org for updates.
At 11 a.m., the storm was about 1,530 miles east-southeast of Hilo, with maximum sustained winds of 40 mph, moving west at 6 mph.
The storm is expected to strengthen quickly and become a hurricane on Thursday as it moves over warmer waters with little wind shear to weaken it.
“A more southern track, as is now being shown in some of the guidance, could result in an even stronger cyclone than indicated,” the National Hurricane Center said.
The storm could bring heavy rain to the islands early next week.
Forecasters cautioned that it is still to early to know the exact path of the storm. However, “the moisture surge surrounding the cyclone may produce significant effects … as the events of the last couple of days demonstrated,” forecasters said.
Ignatio is the ninth named storm.
