By KEVIN JAKAHI Hawaii Tribune-Herald Kohala junior ace Mikayla Kekoa and Konawaena sophomore ace Shaylann Grace tangled in a good old-fashioned pitchers’ extra-innings duel in Kapaau, where the Cowgirls do their best work at home. The two right-handers each fired four-hitters, but the Cowgirls scored in the bottom of the eighth to prevail 4-3 over the Wildcats in a BIIF Division II showdown on Monday, pushing their record to 7-2 […]
Masterful pitching performances at the expense of Honokaa have been the theme so far this week in BIIF Division II softball. Displaying pinpoint control, Kohala’s Mikayla Kekoa took her turn subduing the Dragons on Wednesday, striking out 10 in a four-hit shutout in the Cowgirls’ 4-0 victory in Kapaau. Kekoa didn’t walk a batter and fired 64 of 77 pitches for strikes, according to statistics kept by Honokaa. Kohala (7-4) […]
During an otherwise low-stakes BIIF girls basketball regular-season finale, Kohala’s Kiana Kauka put up a highlight-reel performance. Kauka scored 37 points Saturday night, and the Cowgirls pushed past Keaau 74-65 in overtime in Kapaau. Kauka made 14 field goals and nine free throws to record what is believed to be the high-scoring game of the BIIF season — girls or boys. She surpassed the 35 points Parker’s Conner Brown scored […]
By KEVIN JAKAHI Hawaii Tribune-Herald It’ll feel somewhat like Groundhog Day for Kohala, which will repeat a familiar routine for girls basketball. The Cowgirls will likely finish with a record around .500 and earn a spot in the four-team BIIF playoffs. They’ll beat the teams they need to beat. And they’re already right on course with wins over Hawaii Prep, Ka’u, and Pahoa. But it won’t be the same old, […]
By MATT GERHART Hawaii Tribune-Herald Two years ago, Kohala’s girls volleyball team was stuck in the upper half of the BIIF’s two-tiered regular season, and it entered the playoffs 0-16. Life on the court is a lot more manageable for the Cowgirls since the BIIF went to three tiers in 2016. Kohala ended a long HHSAA tournament drought last season, and they are a year older and wiser this season. […]
The Cowboys lost 36 to 6 to Ka'u. Kohala's only score came early in the first quarter, but Ka'u shut them down with a hard-nosed game of defense for the rest of the game. Ka'u started out with a weak passing offense in the first quarter, and then shifted in the second quarter to a straight-ahead running game. Their aggressive offensive line and strong running backs produced a number of […]
