Weather

One gone, one more heading our way, Lester

todaySeptember 1, 2016

Background

We are mostly done with Hurricane Madeline and now on to Lester. While Madeline went South of the Island and is still actually below the Island heading Southwest, packing 50mph winds, not much trouble should be had here in Kohala. However, Lester will do the exact opposite, passing us East & North.

At 500 AM HST (1500 UTC), the center of Tropical Storm Madeline was
located near latitude 16.7 North, longitude 157.0 West. Madeline is
moving toward the west near 14 mph (22 km/h) and this general motion
is expected to continue for the next couple of days.

Maximum sustained winds are near 50 mph (85 km/h) with higher gusts.
Some weakening is forecast during the next 48 hours, and Madeline
is forecast to become a Tropical Depression by Friday.

Tropical-storm-force winds extend outward up to 90 miles (150 km)
from the center.5 Day Track for MADELINE

So, Kohala has dodged another major storm and now we look to Hurricane Lester with current winds of 105mph. Hopefully,
Mauna Kea will do its magic again, keeping Lester a bit East as it head North and then away from all the Hawaiian Islands.
KNKR and KNKR.ORG will continue, as always, to keep you updated.
