The hours-long standoff in Hawi was resolved peacefully after the suspect was talked out of the situation by negotiators, authorities confirmed Monday evening.
Hawaii Police Department and the Special Response Team were called about the incident occurring on Old Hawi Road at about 10:30 a.m. on Monday. Maj. Robert Wagner said a landlord tried to evict a 28-year-old woman, later identified as Britney Wolf, and her boyfriend or husband from his property. However, he was met with opposition.
Wagner said Wolf fired a shot at or toward the landlord. Afterward, the landlord called police. He was uninjured.
When officers arrived, Wagner said, Wolf had barricaded herself inside a truck on the property and refused to speak to them. However her significant other was compliant and was taken to the police station.
Since the 28-year-old would not speak with police, the Special Response Team and an armored vehicle, a BearCat, was called to the scene. Wagner confirmed she took one shot at the armored vehicle.
At about 4:15 p.m., police put out an alert indicating a road closure in the area of Hawi Road and Route 270 due to police activity. They warned the public to avoid the area.
As of 6:15 p.m. Monday, police were preparing a search warrant for the truck Wolf had barricaded herself in.
