Volcano Lava Viewing Update

todayJuly 7, 2016

Background

ALOHA,

The County has opened a lava viewing area at the end of Highway 130 in Puna, open daily from 3 to 9 p.m. with the last car allowed to park at 8:30 p.m.

While volcanic phenomena are captivating, please be aware of hidden hazards and be prepared:

• Wear sturdy shoes—no slippers. The walk is up to 6 miles round trip on gravel.

• Bring lots of water and a flashlight.

• Be ready for rain, wind, heat and dust.

• The road is unpaved and surrounded by older lava on private property– stay on the road.
