Beaches Open Today at 7am

Hapuna Beach and Waialea Bay will open today at 7am following a shark attack that severely injured a Kansas man 2 days ago. Hawaii County Fire Department overflights Thursday did not produce a sighting of the shark. But the aggressive nature of these sharks and poor visibility caused county officials to recommend that the state keep the beaches off limits until 7 a.m. today.

Road Work on Kynnersley Road

Road resurfacing starts today and continues Friday and Monday on about 1,400 feet of Kynnersley Road between Hawi and Kaauhuhu roads in North Kohala. Department of Public Works Highway Maintenance Division has scheduled the work between the hours of 8:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Alternate lane closures will be in effect. Prepare for some delays or take alternate route.

Kohala Cowgirls Score Big!

Kohala Coach Joby Amaral should be very happy with his team's offensive output against Ka'u; with a 19-4 win! A grand slam by Denae Rivera helped the Cowgirls score 12 runs in the 2nd inning, for their first BIIF softball victory of the season. The game ended after the top of the fourth because of the BIIF mercy rule. Keep it going Cowgirls!

Fire at Kohala Elementary

A small fire took place Thursday morning, March 5, around 8:30am, in the boy's bathroom at Kohala Elementary School. The Fire Department and Police Department are involved. Nobody was injured but some mentioned smelling the smoke. The fire is under further investigation.
