A 63-year-old man died while surfing Saturday morning in waters off Lighthouse Road in Hāwī. He has been identified As John Willard of Waikoloa. In response to a 10:16 a.m. call Saturday reporting an unresponsive man at a surf spot known as “Lighthouse,” officers learned that Willard had not been surfing long when he caught a wave and disappeared. Fire/rescue crews responded to a 10:15 a.m. alarm Saturday (Nov 12) to Kauhola Point in Halaula, North Kohala for a drowning. At the popular surf spot ‘Kohala Lighthouse’ surfers found a 63-year-old man face down in the ocean not breathing and without a pulse. A man and a woman died in a traffic crash Friday morning (November 4) in North Kohala near the 15-mile marker of Kohala Mountain Road (Route 250). They have been identified as 77-year-old Albert Kita and 83-year-old Dorothy Kita, both of Hāwī.
