Ernie Cruz, Jr. Well-known local musician Ernie Cruz Jr. died Tuesday, his family confirmed. Lifeguards pulled Cruz from waters about 100 yards off Sandy's Beach around 2:30 p.m. It's unclear how Cruz got into trouble in the water. HILO, Sept. 19, 2016 – Hawai�i Electric Light today proposed the first increase of base rates in nearly six years to help pay for operating costs, including expanded vegetation management focusing on albizia tree removal, as well as system upgrades to increase reliability, improve customer service and integrate more renewable energy. Hilo had its wettest August in a quarter-century, according to a report released Thursday by the National Weather Service. The rain gauge at Hilo International Airport registered 24.68 inches last month, two-and-a-half times the August average and the highest total since 1991. Starting tomorrow, all County and State facilities, offices and services will be restored including Hele-On Bus service starting with the 3:15 AM bus to West Hawaii. Solid waste transfer stations and landfills will open according to regular schedule. The governor’s office announced Monday. “Money will be distributed to projects that will benefit communities throughout the state, including more than $22 million for Hawaii County, for improvements on the Akoni Pule Highway, Mamalahoa Highway, Kohala Mountain Road, Daniel K. Inouye Highway and Kawaihae Road,” wrote Tim Sakahara, public affairs officer with the department of transportation.
