Firefighters are working to extinguish a blaze near the 12 mile marker on 'Akoni Pule Highway in North Kohala. An eyewitness informed KNKR news around 10:15 this morning of a fire smoldering near mm 12 on Akoni Pule Highway. At 12:55pm a helicopter was on the scene. There are currently no road closures or advisories.
Two-thirds of Hawaii voters polled want the telescope built on Mauna Kea. But Native Hawaiians and residents under 50 were more likely to oppose the project.
The director of the Spanish astrophysics institute said the Canary Islands site still remains only a backup to placing the TMT on Mauna Kea.
Helco will be repairing a transmission line that serves North Kohala. Residents will not have power from approximately 9 am till 11 am today.
