Hawaii County Civil Defense reports emergency shelters will open at 5 p.m. Tuesday ahead of the anticipated arrival of Hurricane Madeline. Locally, shelter is at Kohala High and Elementary With Hurricane Madeline expected to maintain its strength as it approaches Hawaii, the state Department of Education will close public schools on Hawaii Island on Wednesday, Aug. 31, and Thursday, Sept. 1. The closures are being made in anticipation of severe weather.
